Projects
A selection of projects that Stewardship Solutions Ltd or its Directors have worked on.
Tourism Energy Efficiency Programme (TEEP)
2008 - Ongoing
The Tourism Industry Association (TIA) contracted Stewardship Solutions to design an energy efficiency programme for the tourism sector. Since its inception we have managed this nationwide programme on behalf of the TIA, delivering practical energy audits and mentoring to more than a dozen tourism operators. The programme involves coordinating practical energy audits for companies, helping those companies to implement the savings identified and writing up best practice case studies. Our accredited energy efficiency auditors have found savings of between 8 and 30%. Another 14 audits are planned for the first half of 2009 and include accommodation, attraction and transport operations as well as a best practice stocktake for tourist flight operators. Read more about TEEP on the TIA website.
Aggregate and Quarry Best Practice Energy Programme
2009 - Ongoing
Stewardship Solutions is currently working with the Aggregate and Quarry Association on the development and implementation of a pilot national energy efficiency programme commencing in February 2009. In this programme four audits are combined with industry energy benchmarking, training opportunities and mentoring.
Product Stewardship: Mercury and Lighting
2008
In January 2008 Stewardship Solutions completed the "New Zealand Lighting Industry Product Stewardship Scheme: Phase 1 Assessment and Review" report. This comprehensive report was commissioned by the Lighting Council of NZ, the Electricity Commission and the Ministry for the Environment. Stewardship Solutions researched and modelled the flows of lighting products, including mercury, from manufacture to the end of its life. The Phase 1 report is written in a clear, transparent and easily understood style, particularly for non-technical readers. The report outlines the issues and options surrounding the implementation of a product stewardship scheme in New Zealand.
Plastics Industry Best Practice Energy Programme
2006 - Current
As individual contractors to Plastics New Zealand the Directors of Stewardship Solutions have designed and managed an energy efficiency programme for the New Zealand plastic manufacturing sector. The programme involves coordinating practical energy audits for companies, helping those companies to implement the savings found, producing best practice case studies, researching sector wide technologies and developing an energy benchmarking tool for the sector for energy, water, waste and carbon footprinting. Audits have been conducted on 18 manufacturing facilities, delivering savings of between 10 and 20%.
From 2006 both Directors of Stewardship Solutions managed the Plastic Industry’s Best Practice Programme. This hands on programme focussed on resource efficiency and stewardship, environmental management systems, cleaner production, and design for the environment. Two major publications from the programme, part funded through the Ministry for the Environment’s Sustainable Management Fund, was the "Plastics Design for the Environment Guidelines" (see below) and "Iconic Kiwi Plastics Products – improving their environmental footprint".
Plastics Design for the Environment Guidelines
2006
The Directors of Stewardship Solutions co-authored and published the Plastics Design for the Environment Guidelines on behalf of Plastics New Zealand. This is a comprehensive guide to help plastics manufacturers use design for the environment (DfE) principles in the design of their products. Copies of the guide, a first of its kind in New Zealand, are very popular and remain the most downloaded document on the Plastics New Zealand website. The Guidelines are also used as a form of text book in the plastics industry Diploma in Design and Specification of Plastics.
Managing the Transition: Degradable plastics in New Zealand – a Guide and Industry Commitment
2007 - 2009
Ket Bradshaw, Director of Stewardship Solutions, lead the preparation of this guide on behalf of Plastics New Zealand and negotiated commitment from both industry participants and interested stakeholders (recyclers, community groups, composters and government). During 2007 and 2008 the group visited composting facilities, investigated international composting and plastics standards and reached a consensus on product stewardship principles and commitments. The proposed commitments are:
- Commitment 1: Clear and accurate information and labelling;
- Commitment 2: Not to make false claims and not confuse the consumer;
- Commitment 3: To set up a PNZ Degradables Plastics Reference Group;
- Commitment 4: Education to help understand the impacts of their use of degradable plastics.
Fletcher Construction Waste Minimisation Programme
2007 - Ongoing
Simon Wilkinson, Director of Stewardship Solutions, works closely with Fletcher Construction to help implement practical waste minimisation on Fletcher Construction projects. A system was trialled at the Northern Busway construction site and achieved a 23% reduction in waste going to landfill. The learnings from the Busway project have been applied across many of the company’s major civil engineering projects.
Genesis Energy Waste Minimisation Programme
2007 - Ongoing
Simon Wilkinson of Stewardship Solutions works with Genesis Energy on the implementation of a waste minimisation programme across all Genesis Energy sites. A waste minimisation system installed at Genesis head office in Auckland has achieved overall waste reductions of 67%. A waste minimisation programme is being implemented at the Huntly Power Station, with measures to divert more than 60% of solid waste.
Preparation and launch of NZ Waste Strategy
2002
In partnership with Local Government NZ, Ket Bradshaw led the development of the NZ Waste Strategy. It later formed the basis for the NZ Waste Minimisation Act 2008 and covered waste management, resource recovery and minimisation of solid, liquid and gaseous (including hazardous) waste. Ket Bradshaw had the management and strategic oversight of the initial implementation of the NZ Waste Strategy concentrating on 4 major programmes – legislation and institutions, waste reduction and resource efficiency, information and communication, standards and guidelines. A major component was the National Waste Campaign Pilot “Reduce Your Rubbish” which ran from April to June 2003. The major policy development areas included a legislative review and the assessment of economic instruments including a waste levy and product levies for “special wastes”.

New Zealand Packaging Accord
2004
In 2004 Ket Bradshaw was the lead representative from the Ministry for the Environment negotiating the NZ Packaging Accord. This five year accord has eight measures of progress which will form the basis for the new packaging product stewardship scheme, expected to commence in 2009/2010.
